GENIUS HOUR - MATARIKI

On Friday Piako Rua celebrated Matariki.  We learnt a new song in Maori about Matariki.

Then we completed a whole lot of activities Mr Pike had prepared for us.

One of the activities was String Games - Whai.  Some of us already knew a few simple string patterns.  Mrs Lunn taught Ashiya a magic trick with the sting.  Ashiya then taught the test of us how to complete the trick.  We loved it.  Ashiya was such a patient and helpful teacher.  If we have some string at home, we would love to show you the trick!

Here's a video of Ashiya's magic trick on Miss Crowther:

MATARIKI

Matariki is the Maori New Year.  It is celebrated at the end of May, and the beginning of June.  Today we watched a video of the Seven Stars of Matariki...

Then we each took a strip of paper and decorated in our own unique way.  Each strip was as different as we are.  We then wove them together to make a whariki - a mat.  We will hang it on display in the classroom for you to see.
